The NHS is at a pivotal moment. Lord Darzi’s independent review described the service as in “critical condition”. With millions struggling to access GP and dental appointments, record waiting lists, and staff stretched to their limits, bold reform is essential.

The government’s Fit for the Future 10-Year Health Plan sets out three radical shifts: moving from hospital to community-based care, embedding digital technology as standard, and tackling the root causes of illness rather than only treating symptoms. At the heart of these ambitions lies one critical factor: the workforce. Reform cannot succeed without staff who are skilled, adaptable, and resilient.

That is why we are proud to launch the DBC Spark Academy, a new apprenticeship-led pathway designed in partnership with the NHS Leadership Academy and Mediterm to help NHS and public sector organisations rise to this moment of change. Spark Academy is more than just another training offer, it is a dedicated solution to build leadership strength, prepare staff for reform, and ensure apprenticeship investment directly benefits the workforce. Programmes are shaped to the needs of the NHS, embedding sector relevance with learning such as Medical Terminology qualifications and the Edward Jenner Leadership Programme.

The Spark Academy pathway focuses on the areas that will determine whether reform succeeds. We are developing future leaders through business administration and management programmes, while building sustainable pipelines for healthcare assistants, nurses, and allied health professionals. Alongside this, we strengthen the support functions that keep services running smoothly.

Apprenticeships are no longer an alternative—they are central to workforce strategy. They attract new recruits, improve retention, and provide a powerful route for upskilling existing staff to thrive in a digital-first, community-focused NHS. Importantly, they offer opportunities to school leavers, career changers, and those already within the system, making them a flexible and inclusive solution for the future.

The Spark Academy is designed to be a win-win for both employers and learners. Employers benefit from a cost-effective way to close skills gaps, strengthen leadership, and make levy funds work harder. Learners gain the chance to earn while they learn, progress without debt, and build meaningful careers that change lives.

The NHS is facing one of the most significant reform moments in its history. With the launch of the DBC Spark Academy NHS & Public Sector Pathway, we are ensuring employers have the tools to make every pound of their levy work harder, to build leaders who can drive transformation, and to create a resilient workforce capable of delivering the NHS of tomorrow. For learners, this means more opportunities than ever before. For employers, it means a workforce ready to meet the ambitions of the 10-Year Health Plan and to keep the NHS at the heart of our communities for generations to come.
